Wo Wagen des Volkes fahren: Die so genannte "Pissmeile"

Die Kasseler Altstadt muss bis in das fruehe 20. Jahrhundert ein
"Kochtopf"[1] regionaler Mundarten und damit kleinbuergerlich-
proletarischer Eigenheiten gewesen sein. Mit der als "Bombennacht"[2]
bezeichneten von 1943 wurde die Ruestungsstadt Kassel und
besonders die Kasseler Innenstadt (dort beinahe 97% Zerstoerungsgrad)
nahezu zum Ground Zero. Was jeder Bewohner mittlerweile weiss ist,
dass diese Zaesur vorbereitet war:

"In allem aber wurde staedtebaulich die Planungsskizze verfolgt, die
bereits waehrend der Zeit des Faschismus seit den 1930er Jahren
(bereits fuer die Annahme einer Kriegszerstoerung) konzipiert worden
war und bis zu Beginn des Krieges allein innerhalb der Entkernung der
mittelalterlichen Altstadt und der Schaffung des 'Freiheiter
Durchbruchs' umgesetzt worden war." (Wikipedia, "Kassel")

Diese Stadt war demnach planerisch immer Kriegsstadt, Garnisonsstadt,
Militaerstadt, Verwaltungsstadt, Esoterikerstadt, Museumsstadt,
Buergerstadt; nach 45 zur Absicherung der Restauration des deutschen
Kapitalismus. Der Wiederaufbau war also nicht einer nach einem
allgemeinen Zusammenbruch, er war Nachruestung und Aktualisierung
(das wird auch an der ehemals modernsten Strassenkreuzung Europas,
dem Altmarkt, deutlich).
Der Freiheiter Durchbruch[3] wurde Autostrasse, und entlang dieser
Vierspurigkeit wurde die "Wiederaufbaumoderne" zu Glaspavillions
fuer China Restaurants in den 1970er Jahren und fuer Fahrschulen in
den 1990ern. Die heruntergekommene Zeile wird im "Volksmund" auch
"Pissmeile" genannt, die aber bald abgerissen wird, wie man hoert.

Wenn diese Pejoration[4] der Moderne und des Modernen in der "City"
(wie die mit diesem Strassenzug konkurrierende Fussgaengerzone in den
1980ern genannt wurde) das Scheitern des monotonen Aufbaus zum
Abschluss bringt und den in Glas und Beton gestalteten Konsum jetzt
auf ein anderes vielgestaltiges Galeria-Niveau heben will (was zu
vermuten ist), dann sind wir an diesem einen Ende der Modernitaet --
das auch ein stadtlandschaftliches Ende ist, eine viel befahrene
Sackgasse oder cul-de-sac eines
"PKWs Rauf und Runter, Rein und raus" mitten in der Stadt --
ernuechterndem Laerm des Autoverkehrs, post-mixend, downpitchend[5],
sehr nahe. Hier fahren zu den Siegen der Europaeischen
Meisterschaften im Fussball die ver-nationalisierten Wagen des Volkes
mit ihren Flaggen auf und ab.

Wie auf Bestellung ist in der Nachbarschaft bei Architekturstudenten
von einem Stadtplaner im weissen Hemd ein Vortrag gehalten worden,
zur Wiederbelebung, diesmal Rotterdams. Rotterdam wurde bekanntlich
im Zuge des Ueberfalls auf die Niederlande am 14. Mai 1940 durch
die deutsche Luftwaffe zerstoert. Zwischen der Kasseler Bombennacht
(22.10.1943) und dem "Rotterdam Blitz" liegen nur gute drei
Jahre. Und wie erwartet kuemmern sich diese Planer um "ungenutzte
Potentiale" und "vergessene Restraeume".[6]
Macht man "Artgineering"?[7] Ist Bomberdroehnen post-dramatisch?
Wie weit kann Klischee gehen, wie weit glitchè?

oder »bumerangig« interpretierbar. Er kann gelesen werden als
"bombige Nacht", was soviel wie einschlagende Party bedeutet und
anzeigt, wie tief sprachliche Militaria nachwirken. Und er *muss*
immer auch historisch gelesen werden, in Erinnerung an den
Zerstoerungskrieg, der zu den Deutschen in Kassel zurueckkam.

Where Vehicles of the Volk run: The so called "Pee Mile"

Kassel's old town must have been a cooking pot[1] of regional dialects
and therefore petit bourgeois-proletarian peculiarities. In a "Night
of Bombing"[2] in 1943 the Armament City of Kassel and exceedingly
the inner city (there nearly up to 97% demolition) became almost
Ground Zero. Every inhabitant knows already that this caesura was
prepared:

"All in all a sketch of town planning was pursued that was designed
during times of fascism since the 1930ies (already in expectation of
a war destruction) which was until the beginning of the war realised
alone within the enucleation of the medieval old town and the
creation of the 'Freiheiter Durchbruch' ('Freedom's Breach')."

According to that this town was planning-related a War City, Garrison
Town, Military Town, Governing Town, Esoterics Town, City of Museums,
City of Burghers; after '45 for the hedging of the restauration of
German Capitalism. As a result the recovery was not at all one in the
aftermath of a general collapse, it was upgrade and update (this
becomes clear by the fomerly most modern crossroads of Europe, the
Old Market).
The Freiheiter Durchbruch[3] became a road for cars and along this
four-laneness the "Modernism of Recovery" turned into Pavillions of
Glas for china restaurants in the 1970ies and driving schools in the
1990es. This shabby row is popularly called "Pee Mile" which will be
demolished soon, as being said.

When this pejoration[4] of Modernity and the Modern in the "City"
(as the pedstrian area in competition with this street was named in
the 1980ies) concludes the fail of the monotone building up and
strives to level up the consumption configured in glas and concrete
now to a multifarious Galeria-Standard (as one might presume) we are
at this one end of modernness -- that is also an end of urban
landscape, a highly frequented dead end or cul-de-sac of an
"Automobiles up and down, in and out" in the middle of the town --
very close to a disillusioning noise of the car traffic, post-mixing,
downpitching. Here the nationalised Vehicles of the Volk with flags
run back and forth in the victories of the European Championships of
Football.

As if on command a talk was given by an urbanist in white shirt in
the neighbourhood, at a students of architecture's place, on
revitalisation, this time of Rotterdam. As is known Rotterdam was
destroyed in the course of the attack of The Netherlands by the
German Airforce on May 14, 1940. Almost three years only separate
the Kassel Bombennacht (October 10, 1943) and the "Rotterdam Blitz".
And as expected these planners care about "unxeploited
potentialities" and "forgotten leftover spaces".[5]
Does one do "Artgineering"?[6] Is the drone of bombers post-dramatic?
How far can cliché go, how far glitchè?

can be interpreted like boomerang-shaped. It can be read as
smashing night ("bombige Nacht") which implies how deep
linguistical militaria have effect. And it *must* be read
historically nearly always in rememberance of the war of

Krieg im Juni / War in June

Die oertliche Ruestungsindustrie verwendet fuer ihre Produkte in alter
Tradition gerne Raubtiernamen. Kann man diese Aesthetik in Frage
stellen? In der so genannten "Bombennacht" von 1943 wurde die
Ruestungsstadt Kassel und besonders ihre Innenstadt zum Ground Zero
(der Zerstoerungsgrad der Altstadt betrug nahezu 97%). Hat Kassel
darum das "Hiroschima Ufer" am Fluss Fulda oder aus Gruenden einer
Strategie der Verdraengung? Mit "Krieg im Juni" versammelt der POT in
der Kurt-Schumacher-Str. 27 in Kassel Aspekte der Militarisierung.

The local armaments industry uses in fine tradition names of predators
with pleasure. Can one put in question this kind of aesthetics? In a
"Night of Bombing" in 1943 the Armament City of Kassel and exceedingly
the inner city (in the Old Town nearly up to 97% demolition) became
almost Ground Zero. Does Kassel have the "Hiroshima Bank" at the river
Fulda due to this fact or because of a strategy of distraction? With
"War in June" the POT in the Kurt-Schumacher-Str. 27 in Kassel, Germany
assembles aspects of militarisation.

The dOCUMENTA, the hEGEMON


Despite the fact a Critical Art Ensemble tries hard to get in touch
with people's hearts and minds on the spot[1], despite the fact the
TRA.FO 'fights' since years for a friendly, clean but un-cleared and
pro-(street-)people gardening-claim on the bourgeois protestant
churchyard where jerks, drunk and junkies meet[2], despite the fact
WochenKlausur[3] had no other (better) 30.000,00 EUR-idea but
steelwork ... pardon me! streetworkers for those subordinated
"subaltern", despite the word "Competition is good for business" at
the Friedrichsplatz but "everyone for themselves"[4], despite the
fact VW loves to sponsor the Grossveranstaltung and Krauss-Maffei
Wegmann would adore it, despite the fact some Jakobs of the
dada13[5] were "based in Berlin" and took part in (if you like) the
Capital Gentrification Programme there and AND AND AND[6] are
"commoning" ("Liebe Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner Kassels / Dear
Inhabitants of Kassel") before or after Detroit or Buenos Aires (?)
and the local motley Living Without Armament Group fixated on
Panzer[7] will be able to hand out home-baked Cookie Tanks under
this umbrella in Europe's first theatre building in history, despite
the fact of approx. 12 million dependent on state transfer payments
in the FRG and June-September means no holiday at this point, despite
all the activist's interconnectivities and the benefit for the town
(who's town?), despite the hot summer drinks and the Nothern-Hesse
Hotel Occupy Movement[8] and "Kabul could be Kassel"[9], despite
some want to be part of it plus the matter that 13 is the number
after 12 and before 14 and we are suspicious but not superstitious,
will this be bad luck when it's in the end free riding little
rat-shops, cheap cheating copycat stores and temporary homes[10] in
the dirty parts of the postwar and prewar inner "City" without any
right to the real city after such de-reconstruction, selling
non-profitcultural glitchè (Klitsche)[11] stuff or fake residencies
without any subsidies overworking in self-exploitation?

Don’t "Follow Us", criticise us!

The city of Kassel in Germany — some say "near Frankfurt" — is known
as the place for the "world's largest art exhibition". Every five
years a "circus" comes to town and expulses the normal day life and
wakes a Sleeping Beauty. Thus Kassel is known for the fairytales of
the Brothers Grimm as well as for armament industries. In fact the
exhibition Documenta is an outcome of the cold war depression in this
region and is internally quite inconsistent, since there are some
effects to the population. But on the one hand these remain cursorily
on the surface, on the other hand they are burried deeply — for
instance the believe in art as social practice or the educational
benefit of internationality. Taking this as an operation field the
top e.V. association, which has strong and cultivated ties to Kassel,
opens up a working and festivity space called sketchily "POT" in
Kassel during Summer 2012. The association seeks to invite all
interested parties to find ways of co-operation for this
undertaking. This can be a rent-the-space action or a symposion
about the questionable terms of gentrification. The POT will offer
infrastructure and support for foreign cultural producers and
create a program for discussions and presentations.
